Electric Discharge Machining (EDM)
Wire EDM machining (Electrical Discharge Machining) is an electro thermal production process in which a thin single-strand metal wire in conjunction with de-ionized water (used to conduct electricity) allows the wire to cut through metal by the use of heat from electrical sparks. Due to the inherent properties of the process, wire EDM can easily machine complex parts and precision components out of hard conductive materials. With wire EDM the spark always takes place in the dielectric of deionized water. The conductivity of the water is carefully controlled making an excellent environment for the EDM process. The water acts as a coolant and flushes away the eroded metal particles.
EDM wire cutting uses a metallic wire to cut a programmed contour in a workpiece. Cutting is always through the entire workpiece. To start machining it may be first necessary to drill a hole in the workpiece or start from the edge. There is never any mechanical contact between the electrode and workpiece. The wire is usually made of brass or stratified copper.
Traditional machining and cutting are often limited to softer materials. Wire EDM metal cutting, on the other hand, can cut through hardened materials without sacrificing tolerance. Plus, we get the job done faster with the fastest cutting speeds in the world. Some of the other advantages of working with us for Wire EDM services include:
- Gentle, no-force, no-impact cutting for fragile parts
- High tolerance processing for more accuracy
